The pattern
Coaster
- Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in MR. Pull the ring tight and join to the top of ch-3. [12]
- Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in the same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join. [24]
- Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st — repeat from * around. Join. [36]
- Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st — repeat from * around. Join. [48]
- Rnd 5: Ch 1, working from left to right, rev sc in each st around. Join and fasten off. [48]
Finishing
Weave in the tails on the back, splitting the yarn plies as you go so the end stays put. Steam or press the coaster flat under a heavy book overnight for a perfectly flat finish.
Make a matching set
- Two-tone: Work Rnds 1–3 in one color and Rnds 4–5 in another.
- Rainbow stack: Make each coaster in a different earthy tone — terracotta, sage, oatmeal and charcoal look beautiful together.
- Holder: Make a small crochet basket to store them (work a 4.5 in base, then 6 rounds of sc without increasing).
Turn it into a gift
Stack four coasters, tie them with jute twine and tuck in a small tag with the washing instructions: machine wash cold, lay flat to dry. Add a bag of good coffee and you have the perfect handmade gift.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my coasters curling up like a bowl?
You probably have too few stitches or a tight tension. Try going up half a hook size, and make sure you’re working all the increases in each round.
Why are my coasters wavy?
Wavy edges mean too many stitches or loose tension. Go down half a hook size or check that you’re not adding extra increases.
Can I use acrylic yarn?
Cotton is best because it absorbs moisture and handles heat from hot mugs. Acrylic can melt or feel slippery under a hot drink.
