Nothing says “welcome to the world” quite like a tiny pair of handmade booties. This pattern is worked in one piece: an oval sole, straight-up sides, a gently shaped toe and a soft cuff. There’s no sewing apart from weaving in ends, and a pair takes about an evening.

Gauge

16 hdc and 12 rows = 4 in (10 cm). The finished sole should measure about 3.5 in (9 cm) long.

Pattern notes

  • Rounds are joined with a sl st to the first stitch. The beginning ch 1 or ch 2 does not count as a stitch.
  • The end of the sole with 6 hdc in one chain is the toe; the opposite end is the heel.

The pattern

Sole

  • Ch 12.
  • Rnd 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 8 ch, 6 hdc in last ch. Working along the other side of the chain: hdc in next 8 ch, 5 hdc in last ch (the same ch as the first hdc). Join. [28]
  • Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first st, hdc in next 8, 2 hdc in each of next 6, hdc in next 8, 2 hdc in each of next 5. Join. [40]

Sides

  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc BLO in each st around. Join. [40] — this creates the crisp edge between sole and sides.
  • Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. [40]

Toe shaping

  • Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in next 10, sc2tog 6 times, sc in next 18. Join. [34]
  • Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in next 10, sc2tog 3 times, sc in next 18. Join. [31]
  • Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in next 9, sc2tog 3 times, sc in next 16. Join. [28]

Cuff

  • Rnds 8–12: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join. [28]
  • Fasten off and weave in ends. Make a second bootie.

Finishing

  • Fold the top two rounds of the cuff down for a soft roll-down look, or leave them up for a little ankle boot.
  • For a tie, weave the ribbon in and out of Rnd 8 and finish with a bow at the front. Secure the ribbon ends with a couple of stitches so they can’t be pulled out.
  • Add a tiny crochet flower or bow to the toe for a girly version, or a contrasting sole for a sporty look.

Gift idea

Pair the booties with a matching beanie and tuck them into a small basket with a muslin swaddle — it’s one of the most-loved handmade baby shower gifts you can give.

Safety note

Avoid buttons, beads or anything that could become a choking hazard on items for babies. Always secure ribbons and check finished items for loose ends.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a bigger size?

For 3–6 months, use worsted weight (#4) yarn and a 4.5 mm hook with the same counts — the sole will be about 4 in (10 cm).

Which yarn is best for baby booties?

Choose a soft, machine-washable yarn such as baby acrylic, cotton or superwash merino. Avoid fuzzy yarns like mohair that can shed near a baby’s face.

How do I stop booties from falling off?

Thread a ribbon or a crochet chain through the first cuff round and tie it in a bow at the front of the ankle.
